Lead is used in storage batteries, paints, chemicals, cable covering, bullets, and
other products. Its supply was not considered problematic before the war. However, it became
critical, so its use was restricted beginning in January 1942. The shortage of American lead miners limited US productio. Therefore,
the US made large purchases from Australia, Canada, Peru and Mexico,
which enabled the US to build up its stockpile from 18,000 tons in 1942 to 265,000 tons by
April, 1943.WPB 66-68
