Introduction
The 16-mile Mohawk & Hudson was the first railroad incorporated by the State of New York
April 17, 1826 and one of the first railroads in the United States. Its purpose was to connect the
Mohawk River
at Schenectady to the Hudson River at Albany, the M&H
provided a way for cargo on Hudson River steamboats to replace Erie Canal transport.
It opened August 9, 1831. On April 19, 1847, the name was
changed to the Albany & Schenectady Railroad. The railroad was consolidated into
the New York Central Railroad on May 17, 1853.
