Railroad Gauge
The British inventor, Joseph Whitworth, worked out methods for producing parts that matched each other to the nearest thousandths of an inch. However, there still remained the problem that different manufacturers might produce items such as screw threads with different pitches, so that bolts made my one company might not fit in nuts made by another company. In 1841, he proposed a standard pitch for all screws made by any company, a suggestion that was adopted eventually. This was the beginning of standardization that was essential for products to work together when assembled from parts made by any company. Asimov 344 |
