Tennessee

February 9, 1861.   In Tennessee, voters reject the call for a convention to consider secession. Long 34

April 17, 1861.   Nashville:   The state will not grant Lincoln's request for volunteers. Bowman 51

May 6, 1861.   Nashville: The Tennessee legislature by a vote of 20 to 4 in the senate and 46 to 21 in the house orders a referendum for Declaration of Independence on June 8. Long 70

May 7, 1861.

Nashville:   The legislature approves a military league with the Confederacy, in effect joining it.

Knoxville:   Clashes occur between pro-southerners and pro-northerners that result in 1 death and several injuries. Bowman 54

June 8, 1861.   Tennesee voters ratify secession by a vote of 104,913 to 47,239.   However, Eastern Tennessee votes 2 to 1 in favor of remaining in the Union. Long 83

June 17, 1861.   Greenville:   Eastern pro-Union supporters rally for action. Long 86
