Cairo, IL: State troops garrison the city, an important gateway near the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers that is valuable to the Union for an invasion of the Confederacy and defense against a Confederate invasion of the Union. Long 64 April 25, 1861. St. Louis, MO: Capt. James H. Stokes of Chicago, IL, told to get arms for Illinois militia, takes a steam from Alton late at night and secretly remove 10,000 muskets from the St. Louis arsenal for use and returns to Alton the next morning. Long 65 April 26, 1861. Washington: Brig. Gen. Edwin Vose Sumner assumes command of the U. S. Army Department of the Pacific, replacing Albert Sidney Johnston, who resigned to join the Confederate Army as a full General in command of a Department encompassing a large part of the western Confederacy.
